My recent stay at Hotel David Whitney, a Marriott Autograph Collection property in downtown Detroit, was more than just a getaway, it was a true design experience that left a lasting impression on how I approach architecture and interiors. From the moment you enter the building, there is an undeniable sense of history and grandeur. The soaring ceilings, ornate stone details, dramatic arches, and carefully restored finishes immediately transport you to another era, while still feeling refined and relevant for modern living. The way natural light moves through the lobby highlights the craftsmanship throughout the space and reinforces how powerful well-considered architecture can be.
What struck me most was how seamlessly the hotel balances its historic roots with contemporary function. Rather than erasing the past, the restoration celebrates it. Original architectural elements are preserved and honored, while modern updates are integrated in a way that feels intentional and respectful. This approach to design, one that values restraint and authenticity, is something I find incredibly inspiring. It serves as a reminder that great design does not need to be overly complex to be impactful; it needs to be thoughtful, layered, and true to its origins.
Throughout my stay, I found myself studying the proportions of the spaces, the rhythm created by columns and arches, and the richness of materials used throughout the building. There is a sense of permanence and warmth that comes from natural stone, detailed millwork, and time-honored craftsmanship. These elements create an atmosphere of quiet luxury and depth, something that cannot be replicated through trend-driven design alone.
Hotel David Whitney has directly influenced how I am thinking about upcoming projects. The experience reaffirmed my belief in designing spaces with strong architectural bones, meaningful detailing, and materials that age beautifully over time. It has encouraged me to lean further into classic forms, thoughtful symmetry, and layered textures that bring a sense of history into modern spaces. Whether subtle or bold, these architectural references create environments that feel grounded and enduring.
Detroit is a city defined by resilience, creativity, and reinvention, and staying in a landmark like Hotel David Whitney reflects that spirit perfectly. The building is not just a place to stay, but a reminder that architecture tells a story and has the power to inspire long after it was first imagined. It is this sense of timelessness and intention that I strive to bring into my own work, creating designs that honor the past while shaping spaces for the future.
